George’s Potpourri: First Pac-10 away game jinx

Pete Carroll’s teams lost their first away game to Pac-10 competition for the first three years of his tenure. After that, in 2004, he beat second division Stanford by only 3 points and last year he defeated last place Washington by only 3 points. This kind of under-performance is an anomaly for the most successful record in contemporary college football. It must cause some head scratching among our coaches.

USC offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian is a hot head-coaching prospect who oversees what almost annually is one of the nation’s most talented offenses. Of course, when folks believe you have that much talent, they aren’t very patient when things aren’t perfect. And a few Trojans fans believe that USC’s 32.6 points and 434.9 yards per game in 2007 was an underachievement, regardless of whether there were injury issues at nearly every key position.

Palmer Flies His Trojans Flag in Buckeyes Country

With the Ohio State-Southern California game a little more than a month away, the former U.S.C. quarterback Carson Palmer isn’t holding back. The only problem is he currently plays for Cincinnati, where many Bengals fans also root for the Buckeyes. In an interview Thursday with the Los Angeles radio station KLAC, Palmer said when asked about the Sept. 13 game: “I cannot stand the Buckeyes and having to live in Ohio and hear those people talk about their team, it drives me absolutely nuts.”

It’s plastered right on the front of the spring media guide: six consecutive AP top-four finishes, BCS bowls, Pac-10 titles, 11-win seasons. Hershel Dennis should be proud. He might not have had the career, or even one season, he and many of us envisioned after that 38-yard touchdown near the end of his freshman season against UCLA. But his collegiate career spanned one of the greatest dynasties in college football history.

Scott Wolf of Inside USC reported this morning (crazy-early this morning) that “assistant coach” Sam Anno has resigned and is headed to Central Connecticut State to join several others with Trojans ties on the Blue Devils staff. Best I can tell, Anno — who served as a video assistant last season after being a graduate assistant coach the previous two — is no longer with USC … but isn’t on board at CCSU either.

Hey, Buckeyes: Why should Palmer apologize?

So Carson Palmer had to apologize — through a team spokesman, no less — and for what, exactly? Suggesting Ohio State football fans are passionate, confident and convinced the Buckeye program is one of the best in the country? Folks, this isn’t a crime. It’s the truth. Who would be upset because a fan of one team openly rooted for that team to “pound” another team? I believe in most cultures this is known as cheering for your side.
